On Getting My Panties In a Bunch

4.07.2011

Can I first say how much I hate the word "panties?"  I always grew up calling the aforementioned undergarments "underwear" and there's just something about the word "panties" that sends a shiver down my spine and makes me go "blech."  I was discussing this with my neighbor a couple weeks ago and she kindly pointed out that this is purely a personal problem on my part and the rest of the world does not seem to have this issue.  In any case, I've decided that as all good mothers do, I will be passing on my neurotic tendencies to my child and said undergarments shall be referred to as underwear in our house.  So there.

That said, I came across this pattern for children's underwear a couple months ago and was immediately in love.  Is it weird to want to sew children's underwear?  (Is it any weirder than having an aversion to the word "panties?")

In any case, weirdness be damned, this is going to be my next project.  I've purchased the pattern, I just received a bunch of fabric in the mail, and I'm building up my courage to sew with knits once again.  It's on!

  1. Carolyn, I have the same aversion! We always called them underwear growing up, too! Now when I hear the other word, (chills) it sounds sinister and creepy! (Maybe we have suppressed memories just waiting to haunt our dreams) Ugh!
Looking forward to see what cute little undies you make - is that okay, undies?

  2. Laughing out loud. Seriously. I too dislike panties. Scratch that. I dislike the word panties. Yes. It's on my #$%^ not to say list along with "moist" and "ninny". Ah....off to find some Life Boy....blech.

  3. I HATE the word "panties". I also always use "underwear". My mom said THAT word to my daughter last week (who looked at her completely clueless) and it made me shutter.

The hubs has an old roommate who is a bit on the strange side. He was discussing their 1-year-old's recent photo shoot and said that she was wearing nothing but "silky panties." His wife quickly corrected, saying "diaper cover", but the damage was done. I can never again think about this guy without remember the "silky panties" and shuttering violently. BLEH!

  5. O.k., panties is just a strange word. I have called them that a few times to Luca and she looked at me at the tender age of 4 already knowing that word was wrong. Undies it is around here. We all wear underwear. Boys and girls. Anyway, I am so looking forward to potty training so I can make underwear. And to buy these...http://www.etsy.com/listing/52990316/lucys-potty-pants-couture-potty-training

I may even venture into making underwear for me! Crazy I know, but bring it on.

  6. The only time I cringe at the word, "panties" is when they say it on Victoria Secret commercials. It is always said with this weird accent that makes my skin crawl.

I think this is a crazy cute idea. Go for it!

  7. I'm with Kara, I EXTRA hate the word "panties" when a starving 20 year old with an accent is trying to sell them to me on a VS commercial. We say "undies" at my house. As for sewing your own? You've got mad skill, I'm sure they will be awesome!

  10. Enjoy sewing the underwear. I gave made them for both the kids and must say that they are the ones that they go for in the draws. Here in Oz they are often called knickers fir girls and jocks fir boys. Think I would shudder too if someone called my underwear panties:)

  11. I have the same wierd feeling about the word, and never taught it to any of my daughters. I think I may associate it with some kind of sick-o interest in girls' underwear. I'm surprised to learn that other people also have an aversion to the word--thought I was the only one.

  12. I also hate the word 'panties' I dont know why, it is just one of the words that I dont like using. We use 'undies' in our house - I guess being Australian, we shorten everything.

I thought sewing underwear was one of the daggiest things that you could do, however, my daughter is small and so I bought the same pattern and made quite a few pairs. I have since bought pairs, but even my husband agrees that the made ones are so much better and there are less wedgies for my daughter.

  13. I also cannot stand the word "panties" and neither can my mother. We grew up calling them "spanky pants" and well, that's what I still call them today!

  15. Urgh 'panties' always makes me think of seedy lusting greasy men for some reason and therefore should never ever be used in polite society!!

In fact that word should be reserved for dodgy pornos featuring 70's music and a distinct lack of personal topiary! Ha

We're a knickers and boxers or scrunderpants brigade in this house!

  16. Just started reading your blog, and this post really made me laugh... I hate that word! If my husband says it I cringe a little. I grew up with my mom calling underwear "fancy pants" (maybe to make them seem more exciting, so I'd be less likely to pee in them?). Otherwise, undies it is.
