Allow Me To Introduce Ginger

6.06.2011

Well, it's official, I think I may be a Colette convert. And I may be in love with the piece of clothing known as my new skirt. Is that weird?

Let's start at the beginning though, shall we? Allow me to introduce my new skirt, not-so-creatively named Ginger (since it's based off of the
Ginger Colette skirt pattern). She was initially created as a wearable muslin out of some remnant Amy Butler home dec fabric that I had laying around, but I'm thinking that I may have to upgrade her from wearable muslin to actual garment since she actually fits (woo-hoo!). You see, fitting things to the bottom half of my body tends to be a pain in the butt and usually doesn't go so well. After measuring myself and consulting with the size recommendations on the pattern envelope I decided to cut out a size four in the waist and then grade up to a size six in the hips and low and behold, it actually worked. Now I should mentioned that after the skirt was mostly put together I took off about three-eighths of an inch from each side of the skirt from about the hip down to the hem to narrow the silhouette a bit (it just looked too wide for me with the original A-line shape).

And as for what has really made me fall in love with Ginger - it's the waistband. I love that it sits on my natural waist. I love the unique detail of the shape of the waistband. And I love that the pattern shows you a fabulous way of finishing the waistband so it doesn't look like Frankenstein did all the finishing (which is what all my past skirt waistbands look like).

Looking into my crystal ball, I definitely see more Gingers in my future - hopefully in some solid colors so they're not so damn hard to find something to wear with them.

Pattern:
Ginger by Colette Patterns
Size: Cut out of a size four for the waist and graded to a size six for the hips
Alterations:  Took off about 3/8ths of an inch on each side of the skirt from around the hips down to the hem to narrow the silhouette
Fabric: From Amy Butler's August Fields collection

And yes, this would be MMJ day number 6 - the day in which I wore this skirt to work and was then asked by a co-worker if there were teletubbies on my skirt.

  4. Ooh, gorgeous! I can see the Teletubbies thing, but I wouldn't have picked it myself. I think this should be 'the Teletubbies skirt' and you can call your next one Ginger. I have heard nothing but good reports of this skirt pattern... am being tempted but already have two other skirt patterns in the mail!

  6. Lovely! I may need to reconsider that pattern. And I think the fabric is great- you've definitely created a finished piece, not just a wearable muslin.
